Ancient Hampshire Track, Tidgrove Estate
Part of the public footpath through the Tidgrove Estate in Hampshire follows the top of an old Roman road. Built from tightly interlocking flints and lined by mature beech trees, the track joins the Portway—the historic route running from Silchester towards Salisbury—and led towards the site of a Roman villa on the estate.
The survival of the road gives the landscape an unusual physical connection with its past. This is not merely a view towards an archaeological site: the structure of the route remains beneath the feet of today's walkers. The flints, worn track and avenue of beeches combine layers of history, from Roman movement across southern England to centuries of farming and estate stewardship.
Over the past thirty years, Tidgrove has also been regenerated for nature. Work across the estate has sought to restore habitats and encourage biodiversity, while current thinking is increasingly focused on how the landscape can remain resilient as the climate changes. The ancient track therefore runs through a place shaped both by its long history and by active consideration of its ecological future.
Charles Sainsbury-Plaice's photograph captures this meeting of heritage and renewal. The old beeches draw the eye along the road, while the interlocking flints give the path a distinctive texture and permanence. The scene is quiet, but it carries the memory of a route once connected to Roman settlement and now passing through an estate committed to nature recovery.
