A Thelwell Christmas: Childhood Memories and Countryside Smiles

Posted by Charles Sainsbury-Plaice on

There is something about a Thelwell Christmas card that makes you pause and smile. Perhaps it is a determined little pony, an enthusiastic young rider or Santa finding himself in a situation that certainly wasn’t part of the plan.

For some of us, these familiar illustrations bring back childhood memories: a much-loved pony book, riding lessons on frosty mornings, or Christmas cards lined up along the mantelpiece. For others, they are a new discovery, full of character and the kind of humour that needs very little explanation.

Our Thelwell Christmas Card Collection brings those small moments of joy together, ready to share with friends and family.

A little about Norman Thelwell

Norman Thelwell was a British cartoonist and illustrator whose affectionate observations of country life continue to make people laugh. He is especially associated with spirited, round-bellied ponies and the young riders doing their best to persuade them to cooperate.

Anyone who has spent time around horses will recognise the joke. The rider may have a perfectly sensible plan, but the pony often has an entirely different one.

Yet Thelwell’s world reaches far beyond the riding school. His countryside characters, winter villages and unexpected encounters capture the funny side of rural life. There is mischief in his drawings, but also warmth: the feeling that he understood his subjects and enjoyed their little peculiarities.

Christmas as we like to remember it

Imagine coming home with cold fingers and muddy boots, finding somewhere warm to sit and opening a book full of pony cartoons. Outside, the afternoon is already fading. Inside, there is the rustle of wrapping paper and someone trying to find the end of the sticky tape.

This imagined childhood scene is the sort of memory his pictures can bring to mind.

Christmas wasn’t necessarily simpler then, although childhood sometimes lets us remember it that way. We noticed the excitement more than the organising: the decorations appearing, envelopes arriving through the letterbox and the anticipation of Christmas morning.

A familiar illustration can take us back to that feeling for a moment. Not to a perfect past, but to something comforting, funny and wonderfully recognisable. In the middle of today’s busy festive preparations, that little moment of nostalgia can be rather welcome.

Old favourites and new smiles

In Show Jumping Santa, festive magic meets equestrian enthusiasm. It is a big favourite with our customers and a cheerful choice for someone who would happily spend Christmas at the stables.

Not to Be Opened Until Christmas adds a little pony mischief to the excitement of presents, while Sheep & Santa in a Snowdrift brings a distinctly rural twist to Santa’s adventures.

Elsewhere in the collection, snowy villages and countryside characters offer a gentler kind of nostalgia. The range isn’t just for riders. It is for anyone who enjoys country life, expressive characters and a Christmas greeting with a sense of humour.

A little Christmas humour for every generation

You don’t need to have grown up with Thelwell to enjoy his work.

Children can delight in the animals and the visual jokes. Parents and grandparents may recognise illustrations that remind them of their own younger years. Horse lovers will spot familiar pony behaviour, while countryside friends can appreciate the snowy settings and rural humour.

That shared enjoyment makes these cards a lovely choice for people of all ages. A grandparent might send one to a pony-mad grandchild, or an old riding friend might choose a scene that says, “Do you remember when…?”

Sometimes the picture starts the conversation before the handwritten message has even been read.

In a busy season, a handwritten card is a small but thoughtful gesture. It says that someone took a moment to choose a picture, write a message and think of you.

And if that picture includes a mischievous pony or Santa in a spot of countryside trouble, all the better.
