Ask most people to name a Norman Thelwell illustration and they'll probably picture a determined little girl clinging to the back of an equally determined fat pony. Those unforgettable pony cartoons made Thelwell one of Britain's best loved artists, but they were only one part of an extraordinary body of work.

Unlike much modern comedy, Thelwell's humour was remarkably kind. Nobody is ridiculed for long. The sportsman, angler, rider or gamekeeper may become the victim of events, but the joke is affectionate rather than spiteful.

His drawings suggest that anyone who spends enough time outdoors will eventually be outsmarted by an animal. Rather than becoming frustrated, we simply laugh, dust ourselves down and try again.

Published in 1984, Thelwell's Sporting Prints was much more than another collection of cartoons. It playfully echoed the great tradition of British sporting art, gently lampooning the work of celebrated artists including George Stubbs, Henry Alken, Pollard, Rowlandson and John Ferneley, while adding Thelwell's unmistakable humour and powers of observation.

The result was something uniquely British. At first glance, many of the illustrations resemble traditional sporting paintings. Look a little closer and the carefully constructed scene begins to unravel as horses, dogs, fish or game birds quietly take charge of the situation.
