Charles Sainsbury-Plaice Artworks
Fine Art Tree & Woodland Photography by Charles Sainsbury-Plaice
Renowned for his evocative tree photography, woodland landscapes, and images of the British countryside, Charles Sainsbury-Plaice is one of the UK’s leading landscape photographers. With a lifelong passion for ancient trees, forests, and rural heritage, his work celebrates the beauty, resilience, and deep history of Britain’s native woodlands.
For over 20 years, Charles photographed His Majesty The King in his former roles as the Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales, documenting the landscapes, estates, and countryside initiatives closely connected to land stewardship and conservation. This long-standing relationship reflects Charles’s deep understanding of trees, land management, and the cultural importance of woodland.
Travelling extensively to remote and rural locations, Charles has spent decades capturing ancient oak trees, historic wood pasture, wild forests, and seasonal countryside scenes. His work has been published in many of the world’s most respected countryside and lifestyle publications, including Country Life, The Field, Horse & Hound, and Tatler. Book collaborations include Harmony (US cover), England on Horseback, Shooting, A Season of Discovery, and most recently The Queen’s Green Canopy.
Charles’s tree and woodland photography played a key role in The Queen’s Green Canopy project, with selected images exhibited in a sold-out exhibition at Sotheby’s, London, and published in the commemorative Platinum Jubilee coffee table book. These works highlight trees not just as landscape features, but as living symbols of history, biodiversity, and continuity.
Based in Warwickshire, Charles has spent his life immersed in the countryside, patiently observing and photographing ancient woodlands, veteran trees, and evolving forest ecosystems throughout the seasons. His photography shines a light on the vital work of farming and rural communities, supporting those who live, work, and care for the land.
This collection is ideal for tree lovers, woodland walkers, conservation supporters, and collectors of fine art nature photography, offering timeless images that honour Britain’s trees, forests, and natural heritage.
