Wet Weather Warrior – When the Forecast Is Only a Suggestion

British shooting and British weather have always been inseparable. A bright morning can become a downpour before the first drive, apparently waterproof clothing can prove surprisingly optimistic and a carefully planned route may turn into a succession of puddles, mud and flooded gateways.

Bryn Parry captures the spirit required for such days in Wet Weather Warrior. The central figure stands boot-deep in water, shotgun held carefully above the flood and clothing thoroughly defeated by the elements. Alongside, the dog floats past in a bright rubber ring, perfectly dry, entirely comfortable and apparently much better prepared. The warrior doesn't seem phased by the bad weather and infact looks like he is rather enjoying it, compared to all the other characters.

It is classic Bryn Parry. The human battles heroically on while the dog has assessed the situation, found a practical solution and retained complete dignity. Anyone who has spent a winter day in the field will recognise both the misery and the absurdity.

The Days We Remember Most

Fine weather is pleasant, but the days discussed for years afterwards are often those when conditions were at their worst. Rain arrives horizontally, pegs become small islands and everyone discovers whether their boots, coats and sense of humour are truly reliable.

Yet difficult weather can also bring out the best in a shooting party. People help one another across slippery ground, hot drinks become exceptionally welcome and the shared experience creates a camaraderie that a perfect blue-sky day may never quite match.
