Signed Copy of The Queen’s Green Canopy

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a beautifully produced photography book celebrating 70 ancient trees and 70 remarkable woodlands connected with the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, created in honour of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

The photographs were taken over the course of a year by Charles Sainsbury-Plaice and Adrian Houston. Together, they travelled throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to create a lasting visual record of some of Britain’s most historically and culturally significant trees and woodland landscapes.

Britain’s Ancient Trees and Their Stories

The book combines atmospheric photography with extended captions exploring the history, folklore and cultural significance of each location.

Among the trees and woodlands featured are the apple tree traditionally associated with Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity; the ancient yews beside St Edward’s Church in Stow-on-the-Wold; Ashdown Forest’s Five Hundred Acre Wood; and the 2,500-year-old tree beneath which Henry VIII is believed to have proposed to Anne Boleyn.

Charles Sainsbury-Plaice spent 25 years working for HM The King, documenting countryside, farming and environmental initiatives. As one of the principal photographers for The Queen’s Green Canopy, he travelled across Britain to photograph many of the nation’s most remarkable ancient trees and woodlands.
