Beech Trees by Watership Down is a limited edition print by award-winning countryside photographer Charles Sainsbury-Plaice, capturing one of Hampshire's most evocative landscapes. The graceful beech trees overlooking the famous chalk downs are beautifully lit, creating a timeless image that celebrates the beauty of the English countryside.
These ancient beech hangers stand close to Ladle Hill, the site of an unfinished Iron Age hill fort dating back more than 2,500 years. From this high ground there are sweeping views across the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, a countryside shaped by farming, woodland and history.
The area is also closely associated with William Cobbett, whose celebrated Rural Rides took him through this part of Hampshire during the early nineteenth century. Cobbett admired the rich agricultural landscape and the character of the countryside, much of which remains recognisable today.
The surrounding landscape later inspired Richard Adams' classic novel Watership Down, introducing millions of readers to these rolling chalk hills. Through every season the beech trees dominate the skyline, from the fresh greens of spring to the rich golds of autumn, making them one of Hampshire's most distinctive natural landmarks.
