Beech Trees on Ladle Hill in Winter is a limited edition tree print by British countryside photographer Charles Sainsbury-Plaice. Taken near Watership Down in Hampshire, the photograph shows the familiar beech avenue transformed by freezing fog, with frost settling along the branches and the old track disappearing through a quiet winter landscape.

The trees stand near Ladle Hill, where the earthworks of an unfinished Iron Age hill fort overlook the surrounding chalk downs. This ancient monument places the photograph within a landscape shaped by thousands of years of human activity. Old tracks, open downland and beech hangers remain defining features of the North Wessex Downs, creating a countryside in which natural beauty and history are closely intertwined.

Frost on the Ancient Track

In winter, the structure of the beeches becomes fully visible. Without their dense summer foliage, the trunks and branches form a natural colonnade, while frost from freezing fog traces every twig in pale detail. The effect is fleeting: a change in temperature or a shaft of sunlight can quickly dissolve the ice. Charles' photograph captures that brief moment of stillness, when the trees appear almost sculptural against the muted Hampshire sky.

The landscape is also linked with two of Britain's best-known observers of rural life. William Cobbett travelled through this part of Hampshire on horseback during the nineteenth century, recording the countryside in Rural Rides. More than a century later, Richard Adams drew upon the same downs and fields when creating the setting for Watership Down. The frosted track beneath these beeches therefore belongs to a landscape that is archaeological, literary and deeply rooted in the history of rural England.
